ECTS or European Credit Transfer System is a credit system that is based on the workload required to achieve the objectives of a study program for higher education across Europe. The system is used extensively throughout the international higher education institutions to simplify student mobility throughout EU countries and across study programs. The credits are awarded at the successful completion of a course with 60 ECTS credits for one academic year being the general rule.
The European higher education system follows the Bologna Process which supports a three level system of education. The first level is a Bachelor’s degree that requires 3 to 4 years of education. The programs under the bachelor’s degree usually require 180-240 ECTS credits. The second level is Masters Degree and typically requires 1 to 2 years of studies and the credits required ranges from 90 to 120 ECTS credits. The third level is the PhD programs and can take up to even 5 yrs depending on the field of study and the research formats.
The visa requirements vary from country to country and you would need to meet up with an experienced counsellor or educational consultant for this information. Another alternative is to contact the embassy website of the respective country.
The university admissions are usually held in two separate intake periods – Spring & Fall/Autumn. Even if you plan for a Fall/Autumn intake it is essential to start the process immediately as the universities close the admissions very early (by April/May). Also the process involves a lot of coordination and communication with the university at regular intervals to submit documents, get interview/ test dates and so on. Added to that is the time period required for visa procedures as well. Therefore it is advisable to start preparing well in advance and now is a perfectly good time to do so.
The fair is absolutely free of charge for all and we encourage you to attend this even if you do not plan for taking up education abroad at the moment. The information shared at the booths will give you something to think about if you plan for such a path in the future.
